Superfood: Seaweed

Historically in Scandinavia, edible seaweed was commonly consumed and used as garnish, stock base and for flavour. Nowadays it is not a modern staple in the kitchen anymore, unless you are in Asia. This is something the young Danish company ‘Nordisk Tang’ (Nordic Seaweed) would like to see change.

The company ‘Nordisk Tang’ only got started in 2015 and is made up out of two families, Olesen and Skjold Ottesen. They have a great passion for, and knowledge about, seaweed and would like it to regain popularity. The seaweed they use in their products is picked in Scandinavia, most of it gets harvested in the spring and the fall. ‘Nordisk Tang’ has a diverse selection of seaweed products that they retail in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany, www.nordisktang.dk

Edible Seaweed is a true superfood and a very versatile produce. It can be consumed raw, cooked, baked, pureed, dried, fried, grilled or grated. It can be eaten as it is, or in soups or salads together with other warm or cold ingredients.

Why seaweed is good for you:

  • Seaweed is one of the only non-animal sources of vitamin B-12. Hence an important source of nutrition for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Seaweed is the plant that contains the most amount of K-vitamin. The K-vitamin helps with blood clots to stop the flow of blood if you have a wound.
  • Seaweed contains natural salts.
  • Seaweed provides some omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.
  • Seaweed is an extraordinarily potent source of antioxidants, which helps prevent inflammation.
